What is Compound exercise?
A compound exercise is a movement that works several joints and muscle groups at the same time, like a squat or a deadlift.
Also called: multi-joint exercise, compound lift.
Compound exercises use more than one joint and many muscles together. Squats, deadlifts, bench presses, overhead presses, rows and pull-ups are classic examples. Because so much muscle is involved, you can usually lift heavier and get more work done in less time.
They form the base of most beginner programmes. For example, a squat trains your thighs, glutes, core and lower back in one movement. Start with light weight or just your bodyweight, learn the form, and add load slowly. If you have an injury or health condition, check with a doctor first.
