What is Macros (macronutrients)?

Macros are the three main nutrients your body needs in large amounts: protein, carbohydrates and fat.

Also called: macronutrients, macro split.

Macros, short for macronutrients, are protein, carbohydrates and fat. Each gives your body energy and a job to do. Protein helps build and repair muscle, carbohydrates fuel your activity, and fats support hormones and help absorb some vitamins. Protein and carbs give about 4 calories per gram, and fat gives 9.

Tracking macros means setting a daily target for each, not just a calorie total. For example, an Indian vegetarian lifter might include dal, paneer, curd and soya for protein, roti and rice for carbs, and ghee or nuts for fat. Anyone with a medical condition or special diet should ask a doctor or dietitian first.
