What is Rate of perceived exertion (RPE)?
RPE is a 1 to 10 scale you use to rate how hard a set or workout felt, where 10 means you could not do another rep.
Also called: RPE, perceived exertion, effort scale.
RPE stands for rate of perceived exertion. You give each set a number from 1 to 10 based on how hard it felt. An RPE of 10 means you were at your limit, while an RPE of 7 means you could have done about three more good reps.
RPE is useful because it adjusts to your day. If you slept badly and a weight feels heavier, you simply note a higher number instead of forcing the planned load. For example, a trainer may ask you to do squats at RPE 8, meaning you finish with roughly two reps still in the tank.
