What is High-intensity interval training (HIIT)?

HIIT is a style of cardio that alternates short, hard bursts of effort with easier recovery periods.

Also called: HIIT, interval training, high intensity intervals.

HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training. You work very hard for a short time, such as 30 seconds, then rest or move gently for a similar or longer period, and repeat. Sessions are brief, often 15 to 25 minutes, but they feel demanding.

You can do HIIT with sprints, cycling, skipping or bodyweight moves like burpees. For example, sprint for 30 seconds, walk for 60 seconds, and repeat eight times. Because it is intense, beginners should build a base first, and people with heart or other health conditions should talk to a doctor before trying it.
