What is Hypertrophy?
Hypertrophy is the increase in the size of your muscle fibres, which is what we usually mean by building muscle.
Also called: muscle growth, muscle building.
Hypertrophy is the scientific word for muscle growth. When you train against resistance, eat enough protein and calories and recover well, your muscles can slowly get bigger over months. It is different from pure strength training, though the two overlap a lot.
Hypertrophy training often uses moderate weights for about 6 to 15 reps per set, taken close to fatigue, across several sets per muscle each week. For example, doing 3 sets of 10 dumbbell presses twice a week fits that style. Results vary from person to person and no outcome is guaranteed.
