What is Bulking?

Bulking is a phase of eating in a calorie surplus and training hard with the goal of gaining muscle size.

Also called: bulk, lean bulk, mass gaining phase.

Bulking is a period where you deliberately eat more than you burn while lifting weights so your body has extra resources to build muscle. Some weight gained will be fat as well, which is normal. It is usually followed by a cutting phase if someone wants to reduce body fat.

A lean, gradual bulk is usually easier to manage than eating without limits. For example, add about 250 calories to your TDEE, keep protein high with foods like eggs, curd, chicken, paneer or dal, and track your weight weekly. Under-18s, pregnant women and people with health conditions should speak to a doctor first.
