How to do the step up (barbell)
- 1
Rest a barbell across your upper back and stand facing a sturdy box or bench. Place one foot fully on the box so your knee is about 90 degrees.
- 2
Drive through the heel of your top foot to stand tall on the box, bringing your trailing leg up beside it. Keep your chest up and the bar steady.
- 3
Step down slowly over 2 to 3 seconds, breathing in as you lower and out as you rise. Alternate or finish one side first.
Form tip: Use a lighter weight than a squat and check the box is stable; do not push off your back leg or lean forward.
