How to do the shoulder press (machine)

  1. 1

Adjust the seat so the handles are at shoulder height when you sit with your back flat on the pad. Select your weight, grip the handles and keep your feet flat on the floor.

  2. 2

Press the handles up until your arms are almost straight, without locking your elbows hard. Keep your head against the pad and your shoulders down.

  3. 3

Lower slowly until the handles return to about shoulder height. Breathe out as you press and in as you lower.

Form tip: Do not let the weight stack slam down at the bottom; control the return to keep tension on your shoulders.
