How to do the seated shoulder press (barbell)

  1. 1

Sit on a bench with back support, set to upright, with feet flat on the floor. Unrack the bar and hold it at upper chest height with hands just outside your shoulders.

  2. 2

Press the bar straight overhead until your arms lock out, tucking your chin slightly as it passes your face. Keep your back against the pad.

  3. 3

Lower the bar slowly to your collarbone or upper chest and pause briefly. Breathe in at the bottom and out as you press.

Form tip: Do not arch your back off the pad to push more weight; keep your ribs down and your core tight.
