How to do the hamstring stretch

  1. 1

Lie on your back with both legs straight. Lift one leg and hold behind the thigh or calf, or loop a towel or strap around your foot.

  2. 2

Slowly draw the leg toward you, keeping the knee almost straight, until you feel a gentle stretch along the back of your thigh. Keep your other leg flat on the floor and your head relaxed.

  3. 3

Hold for 30 to 45 seconds, breathing slowly, then lower and switch legs. Each time you breathe out, let the leg move a little closer.

Form tip: A mild pull is enough. Bend your knee slightly if you feel it behind the knee or in your lower back, and do not bounce.
