How to do the hip thrust (barbell)

  1. 1

Sit on the floor with your upper back against a bench, a padded barbell rolled over your hips, and feet flat about hip-width apart.

  2. 2

Drive through your heels and lift your hips until your thighs are parallel to the floor and your shins are vertical, squeezing your glutes hard.

  3. 3

Pause for a second at the top, then lower your hips slowly until they almost touch the floor. Exhale as you thrust, inhale as you lower.

Form tip: Tuck your chin and ribs down and stop at hip level; do not over-arch your lower back at the top.
