How to do the deficit deadlift

  1. 1

Stand on a low platform or plate, about 1 to 2 inches high, with feet hip width apart. Hinge down and grip the bar with a flat back, chest up and arms straight.

  2. 2

Brace your core and push through the floor to pull the bar up along your legs. Stand tall and squeeze your glutes at the top.

  3. 3

Lower the bar under control and reset on the platform. Take a breath and brace before each rep, using less weight than normal deadlift.

Form tip: Do not let your lower back round at the bottom; a higher deficit needs a lighter load and better hip mobility.
