How to do the front raise (barbell)

  1. 1

Stand tall holding a barbell with an overhand grip, hands shoulder-width apart, resting in front of your thighs. Keep your knees soft and your core braced.

  2. 2

Raise the bar straight in front of you to shoulder height with your arms nearly straight. Pause for a second at the top.

  3. 3

Lower the bar slowly back to your thighs without swinging. Breathe out as you lift and in as you lower.

Form tip: Keep your ribs down and your body still; using your hips or leaning back means the bar is too heavy.
