How to do the lateral raise (cable)

  1. 1

Set a cable pulley to the lowest position and stand sideways to it. Grab the handle with the far hand, so the cable crosses your body, and stand tall with your core braced.

  2. 2

Raise your arm out to the side until it reaches shoulder height, leading with your elbow. Keep a slight bend in your elbow and do not shrug.

  3. 3

Lower slowly, keeping the tension on the cable at the bottom. Breathe out as you lift and in as you lower. Complete your reps and then switch sides.

Form tip: Keep your torso still and do not lean away from the stack; the cable gives constant tension, so lift smoothly.
