How to do the lateral raise (machine)
- 1
Adjust the seat so your shoulders line up with the machine's pivot point. Sit with your back against the pad and place your forearms or hands against the pads.
- 2
Raise your arms out to your sides until they reach about shoulder height. Keep your shoulders down and push with your elbows, not your hands.
- 3
Lower slowly back to the start without letting the weight stack touch down. Breathe out as you lift and in as you lower.
Form tip: Do not shrug your shoulders toward your ears; keep the movement smooth and stop at shoulder height.
